Spring Is Here!

Trees are budding and flowers are blooming and I can’t believe it’s already almost April! Mrs. Brown and I were watching all the Pre-K kids last week and realized how much they have all grown! Every year when we get our new students they always seem way to little to be in school. They need help doing almost everything from tying shoes, wiping noses, putting on coats, holding a pencil, to opening their milk and cutting up their food. But by this time every year they make big changes and it’s amazing to watch. Some of them may start the year knowing only the letters in their name and now they are recognizing sight words and sounding out words in the stories we read and taking A.R. tests. I love watching the changes in their social behaviors as well, most of them have trouble sharing toys or crayons at the beginning of the year but later we catch them helping others find a certain color or telling someone they like their picture or the bow in their hair. I have a classroom full of little sprouts that are growing into beautiful little people and I can’t wait to see what else they learn in the next few weeks.

The kids have been working hard learning new popcorn words and are beginning to sound out several words on their own. We are working on short sentences and punctuation marks which they love to point out while I’m reading a story.
They are also practicing hard on handwriting skills, mainly their name and our popcorn words. Please keep reading to your children. All of my students are taking A.R. tests after Mrs. Brown and I read them a story and they love knowing they are earning points. Parents, when you finish a box of cereal at home please send one or two empty boxes with your child to use next month for Valentines Day. Thanks for such a great turn out during our goals day.

Wow!! It’s here already!!

Well we start off a new school year with brand new little faces and I’m so excited! So far I have 15 little ones, 10 boys(o boy!), the girls are going to have to get it under control early. The school looks wonderful and the kids are going to love it! Lots of awesome changes!

We can read!

WE CAN READ!!! Some of the pre-k kids are reading ! They were so excited to realize that they really could read a book, the look on their little faces was so amazing. We are still practicing sight words, letter sounds, rhyming words as well as some new math songs that they really enjoy. This week we are discussing seeds and plants, what kinds of foods we grow, how plants grow and how we protect plants. Hopefully we will have more readers before the end of school.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

We are reviewing letter sounds and names : o,a,c,d,g,s,f,l,i,t,j,b,k,m,n,r,h,p and introducing the letters u,v,w. We are discussing vehicles that travel in the air. The differences in the engines vs. propellers. How hot air balloons are used for fun and for weather research.
We’ve been working on sight words: go, and, can, for, are and I’m adding I, a and in. They are working hard to learn these.
We are also still working on rhyming words using the -it and -at families. The kids are also learning the difference between letters and words, how letters make the words and the words make the sentences. That’s a little difficult for them to understand but they are working at it. Have a great week.

February 1, 2011

Brrrrrrr it’s cold!!!! Well the snow was pretty but the wind was brutal. We had a shortened day today due to the weather and tomorrow we will begin at 9:00a.m. so bundle up. This month our theme is transportation and we will explore different ways we get from place to place and how travel influences how people live, what they wear and eat and what activities they choose as well as how animals travel on land, sea and in the air. We will have several new vocabulary words to practice. We will also begin sending home sight words to practice every week. We will also be practicing blending sounds using word families: -at, -it, and -ot. The kids are doing very good with their letter sounds but still need lots of practice. Have fun in the snow and stay warm.

Pre-K update

Looking forward to visiting with parents Tuesday the 18th. We have been working hard on Phonological Awareness using rhyme, syllable clapping, identifying words in sentences and identifying words that begin with the same sound. They are all making very good progress.
This week we will begin our unit on Dinosaurs and the kids usually love this one. This will be a two week unit and we have several dinosaurs to learn about. See you Tuesday.

December 13-17

This is the last full week of school before the Christmas holidays. We are all moved in to our new classroom, which is located across from the cafeteria. We are still adjusting to the change but the kids seem to like it. School will dismiss at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, December 21, for the holidays . I will be sending notes about our Christmas party home this week.
