Here are a few study tips:
Find a homework time that allows for consistency each day. Shortly after school, or during the early evening hours works well. This allows plenty of time for your child to work through their assignments. For instance, late at night before bedtime is often not conducive for your child to retain all the information needed to be successful. They’re often too tired from their day to really focus. They’re not storing it into long term memory.
Keep away from high traffic areas in the home & try turning off the T.V. during homework time. It gives your child a chance to really focus on the task at hand. Some kids are easily distracted and lose their concentration on what they are supposed to be working on.
Target Words: Practice writing them, reading them, and spelling them out loud. Try using magnetic letters to manipulate on the fridge or a baking sheet, and flashcard games to make it more enjoyable.
Reading AR: Patience! The extra effort and time you put into it will pay off. Allow your child to independently read as many words that they can recognize and assist blending unknown words. It’s a slow process—but it does get better. It also helps to read the book more than once. Oftentimes, once isn’t enough. Try reading it to them once to model how it’s done, & for comprehension, then let them try the 2nd time around for practice, and even a 3rd time for fluency. Remember this isn’t done all in one sitting. Try it at different intervals throughout the evening.
Parents I do appreciate all you do for your child to have a successful learning experience. Practice really does make progress. I can tell the difference in the classroom. The more practice they get then the more confident they are. I hope you find the above tips helpful. Speaking as a parent, these are tips that others offered me a long time ago and it was through trial and error that I found what works best for my family at home. I welcome parents to share positive comments about your own study tips or ideas on our blog. We are working together towards a common goal!

When we have a new popcorn word or any word we have a problem sounding out. We like to sing as we spell it, then say it. It can be to any tune or melody but it makes it fun and helps us to remember that particular word no matter how challenging it may have been. Keep up the great work kids & always have fun doing it!
