Tutorials

September 12th, 2011

What are tutorials? When are they and who get’s to attend? At Quanah High School we offer tutorials Tuesday through Friday from 7:55-8:15. Tutorials are designed to aid students who are 1) failing a particular class, 2) Have not shown success on TAKS tests, 3) your teacher deems it necessary for your success, or 4) you just need a little extra help. For some students tutorials are mandatory (you have to attend) but tutorials are open to anyone who might need some help. Our teachers are always here and in their rooms if you need to just drop in for some guidance. For those students who are assigned tutorials, attendance is mandatory. Failures deem tutorials mandatory for some students. Those students will remain in tutorials until the next grading period (3weeks progress or 6 week report card). Anytime an assigned tutorial is missed or you are tardy, you will be given lunch detention for that day. Be sure and check the list that is posted by the cafeteria entrance to see if you are assigned a tutorial.

154211_10150113830141153_504156152_7645745_7603807_s-1All state competition is over for Quanah High School students for 2010 and it ended on a high note as the FFA Senior Farm Skills Team finished first at the State LDE contest at Sam Houston State University.  Jacie Randolph, Tyson Marsh, Haley Quisenberry and Brady Whitaker earned the banner for winning the skills contest.  Kyle Gilliam, Quanah FFA advisor, was the coach of this team.  Beverly Marsh placed 5th in the Junior Creed Contest.  Kylie Watson competed in Job Interview for the second consecutive year.  Kyle Bates, Quanah FFA advisor, also accompanied this contingent to Huntsville.

Cody Bodine and Olivia Jalamo also ended their cross-country season at the State Meet in Round Rock.  These runners both placed in the top 25 in Class A for the 2010 season.  Jan Forrest, QHS Cross Country coach, trained and accompanied these students all season long.

The Quanah Indian football team ended their season in the Regional round of the Class A playoffs with a record of 8 wins and 5 losses.  Roderick Woodard was named the Offensive MVP of District 3.  A big thank you to Head Coach Jason Sims and his staff of assistant coaches including Matt Cunningham, Trenton Boyd, Steve Lucy, Tim Holt and Kim Smith.

It has been a great year for extra-curricular competition for the Indians.  I have great expectations for all other sports, for UIL academics and for FFA and FCCLA contests in the spring.

Calculators

Students using the new TI-84 calculators in the science lab.

Quanah High School just received 130 new TI-84 graphing calculators to be issued to the freshmen, sophomores and juniors.  Paperwork will be distributed to students today and calculators will be issued on Monday if the calculator loan agreement is signed and returned.  The decision purchase these calculators was based mostly on student input to Mrs. Campsey, QISD counselor. Several students felt they could have done better on the TAKS test with more practice using the graphing calculator.  With that information, Mrs. Campsey was persuasive with her argument for individual calculators.  The current classroom sets will remain in Mr. Hale and Mr. Freeman’s classes and are available to seniors to check out as needed.  QHS is appreciative of the decision to make calculators available on a one-to-one basis like our MacBooks.
