Welcome to a new school year.  I will be teaching Calculus, Precalculus, and Geometry.  All my classes are well underway and doing a great job.  So far only one absence and no tardies.  This is a tremendous advantage when we are covering so much new stuff everyday.



Short cut: To subtract transposed (order of numbers is reversed) three digit numbers. Your answer will be a three digit number and the middle number will always be 9. The outside numbers will always total nine. Example 1: 451 – 154 = Since in the first column, 11 – 4 equals 7, the answer will be 297 because 2 and 7 total nine and the middle number of the answer is always 9. Example 2: 357 -753 = – 396 because 13 -7 =6.

Short cut # 5: To multiply a number by 12, double the ones digit and write down the ones digit of your answer; carry the rest to the next step. Double the rest of the number and add this to the remainder from step one and the original number. Example 1: 38 X 12. Double 8 and write down the 6. Double 3 and add to 38 and the one you carried. Answer = 456. Example 2: 136 X 12. Double 6, write down the 2 and carry the 1. Double 13 and add to 136 and the 1 you carried. Answer = 1632.

Short Cut # 4: To divide by 27, divide by 9, then divide by 3. Example: 459/27 = 459/9/3 = 51/3 = 17. Example 2: 675/27 = 675/9/3 = 75/3 = 25.

# 3. To square a number ending in 5; write down 25 as the tens and ones digit of your answer, then multiply the tens digit by the next higher number and write that down. Example 1: 45 squared = (4X5) and 25 = 2025. Example 2: 125 squared = (12 X 13) and 25 = 15625.

Number Sense Trick # 2 To multiply by eleven, write down the one’s digit, add the digits two at a time from the left and write down the ones digit of your sum. Be sure to add any carryover. When you get to the end, write down the last number plus any carryover. Example 1: 132 X 11 = Write down the 2; 3+ 2 = 5, write down the 5;1 + 3 = 4, write down the 4; write down the 1;132 X 11 = 1452. Example 2: 385 X 11 = 4235

Number Sense shortcut of the day =>To multiply by 25, divide by 4, if the remainder is zero, write 00. r1, write25. r2, write 50, r3, write 75. Example 1: 32 X 25 =800. Example 2: 135 X 25 = 3375.
