Apples, Science, and Math

What do they have in common, you say?  Students have been studying the life cycle of insects and plants. One of their vocabulary words this is dissect.  Each student received half of an apple. We dissected the apples, counted the seeds, predicted how many trees could possibly be grown from these seeds, and discussed why that hard core is in the middle of delicious apples. They learned how the core of an apple is formed. We cut each half section into quarters and compared them to fractions.  Of course they ate their work at the end of the lesson.

This apple appears to have been nibbled on before the experiment started!

What’s the fraction?

This apple never had a chance. Half of it was eaten before the lesson began.

How many sections can I cut?

How many seeds did you find in your apple?

What fraction of the apple do you have now?

Interesting Sights at Reagan

Walking the halls of Reagan Elementary you wouldn’t expect to see a Roadrunner chasing an apple, but maybe so!  One of Mrs. Tabor’s students left an apple near the roadrunner beside her door. :-) I’m sure they liked the idea of it having an afternoon snack!
